Making Music with a Computer
This is a great time to be a musician. The technology that is available today is very powerful, and even more importantly, very affordable. Programs that many professional musicians and studios use are available to anyone, and you don’t have to be a millionaire in order to acquire these tools.
What you need …
With the average current computer, music software, an upgraded Audio/MIDI interface, and a few other peripheral devices, you can have your own recording studio, with the ability to produce exceptionally good sound quality. There are many different types of software programs, and very diverse ways to interact with the technology in order to create music. From the accomplished musician to the beginner, there are tools to allow you to create your own music.
What You Can Do …
There are programs to record audio, turning you computer into a virtual tape recorder. Each instrument you record has its own track, with control over levels, equalization and effects. Other programs allow you to record with MIDI, using keyboards and other types of electronic devices, and musical instruments. Recording with MIDI is different than recording audio, and allows a far greater degree of control and editing. The best programs combine both ways of recording into a seamless interface. As well, there are many other types of programs available, such as Notation programs which are designed to print a professional looking score.
