Blues is the root of much of the music we hear every day—rock, R&B, jazz. Playing blues piano will gear you up to play and understand many other styles of music.
Studying the blues on piano will include understanding of the three basic chord common to the blues (the I, IV and V chords). You will learn about blues scales, blue notes, blues licks, and common left-hand bassline patterns like the Boogie Woogie.
If your favorite type of music leans towards popular music, learning to play a song from your favorite band is something that will give you a sense of accomplishment. Most rock music is available at your local sheet music store. The Internet is also a good source for you favorite music. Bring in your favorite song and learn how to play it.

Having mastered the basics of keyboard playing, the vast library of piano literature is available to explore. There is plenty of intermediate level music written by the world’s greatest composers. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin, just to name a few. As your playing advances there is plenty of music to keep you challenged for many years.

There is probably no other style that is more relaxing and interesting to play for me than some type of fingerstyle guitar. Although this style can be quite technically demanding, even simple fingerstyle tunes can sound so much more interesting than just strumming chords. The styles can range from rock, country, Blues, Jazz, Classical, Celtic, to a combination of many of these styles. So what ever your interest in in fingerstyle playing I’ll be able to cover all the bases with you at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Classical Guitar Lessons start with basics such as holding the guitar in the correct position and proper left hand finger and hand position as well as basic finger picking exercises and technique. Basic but beautiful classical pieces will be taught and then on to intermediate and then more advanced pieces. You will get a thorough understanding of this style and I’ll cover all the bases with you at a pace that is comfortable for you. Alan Darby Guitar Instructor Tempo School of Music
To my mind there is probably no style of music more worth studying than jazz. The style has a rich diversity of rhythms, melody and harmony.
I will help you get started on the path to achieving yours goals in this style by making sure you have the basic fundamentals available to you in order to go as far as you want. These include a good grounding in sight-reading, theory, ear training and a working knowledge of the guitar as it applies to this style of music. We will work on chords, scales, and rhythm and apply them to actual tunes while we learn to improvise.
We will go at whatever pace you feel comfortable with – fast or slow. I am very patient and have taught hundreds of students over the last 15+ years. I look forward to helping you achieve your musical goals whatever they are.
When I started playing 30 years ago the first styles of music I played was bluegrass and country. The basic characteristics of these two types of music are very similar. So whether you are interested in a more traditional country style or something more modern I’ll be able to put you on the right path. We’ll go at a comfortable pace for you to ensure you get the most out of your lessons.
